Kay

Ezra’s expression had vanished, the golden flames of his irises burning into dark pools of obsidian. My heart had stopped at the sight, fear choking me as I felt his soul withering via our connection.

Raphaela had immediately attempted to bring him back, but the other female had pulled her away, spouting off some nonsense about this being our destiny to walk now. “The Heiress of Bael will know what to do,” she’d said cryptically before both females had left in a flurry of wings.

She was wrong.

I didn’t know what to do.

Ezra convulsed, his body turning cold above me.

I missed the fire of his embrace, the sensuality of his touch. He’d thought this was a dream, admitted to fantasizing about me every night, but I’d felt compelled to tell him this was real.

Even though it certainly hadn’t felt real.

It’d felt like a dream to me, too.

Because Ezra was being nice to me. And I enjoyed the sensation of him against my bare skin.

All hot, hard male.

Kissing me.

Touching me.

Biting me.

No one had ever lit me on fire the way he had, and we’d barely even begun.

Because he’s my mate, I realized. Our souls are forever intertwined.

Not even an Incubus could evoke the reactions from me that Ezra had.

And now he was dying on top of me.

“Ezra,” I said as his eyelashes fanned downward over his sharp cheekbones, concealing his darkening irises. He flinched, some life entering his expression, but it lasted for a mere breath before he started shivering all over again.

My heart skipped a beat, fresh memories of his near death flashing behind my eyes. We’d come so far. He’d been awake. He’d been kissing me. He’d been warm.

I sank my nails into the back of his neck, my mind reeling at this sudden change.

So cold.

Almost frozen.

My power ignited, sending a wave of warmth through him that parted his lips on a sigh.

Balance, I marveled.

Or was it the bond?

A bond that could right the scales, the angel had said, her tone and words so very oracle-like in nature. It’s up to their souls now to decide the future for us all.

I swallowed, disliking the sound of that fate.

“Ezra,” I whispered, trying to draw him back to me.

But he didn’t react this time, his skin cooling again.

I blasted him with more power, then pressed my lips to his in a demand for him to respond. His arms tightened on either side of me, his body immediately tense.

I did the only thing I could think to do and kissed him again.

His fingers wove through my hair in response.

But his eyes remained closed, his trembling form still chilled on top of mine.

“Fuck it,” I muttered to myself, cupping the back of his neck and parting his lips with my tongue.

He resembled ice. So I filled him with fire. I poured every ounce of my inner flame into him and demanded his reciprocation.

A groan rumbled from his chest, the sound quickly deepening into a growl. He came alive with a strength that took my breath away, his mouth stealing control of our kiss as his body mastered mine on the bed.
